Up for auction is this VERY RARE Victor Type "R" (Royal) Talking Machine / Phonograph. The Victor R talking machine was introduced in 1902 and was discontinued in 1904. The cabinet is constructed of quarter sawed oak with oxidized metal corner braces. The type of talking machine motor was powered by one mainspring and had to be wound after each record. The standard horn was made of all steel, but for additional cost, one could purchase the black and gold horn, which this unit has. The original label is still partically intacted on the bottom of the machine. You can see where the original purchase price was a whopping $15.00. I suppose in those days, $15.00 was in fact a premium price. The original Victor tag is still on the side with the Type R and a serial number of 8894. You will also notice that this is one of the early talking machines, since the metal tag is pre-victor dog. This talking machine also comes with the original reproducer and needle. The turn table does turn when the switch is triggered. I do not have any records to see how well it plays. The turn table size is 7". The felt on the turn table is quite worn and would need to be replaced. This is in original untouched condition. This is a RARE find and would make an excellent addition to your talking machine or phonograph collection.
